During Barbie's July 2023 run, a confrontation at a São Paulo cinema became a widely shared video. Contemporary reports described an argument turning physical while the film's credits were still on screen.

The accounts published that week also included different explanations for what happened before the shove. Those details matter when a short clip is being passed around on its own.

SBT News's July 25 report placed the incident at Espaço Itaú de Cinema in Bourbon Shopping on July 20, 2023. It described one woman pushing another, who fell between the seats, got up and struck back with her shoe. A member of staff intervened. These were reports about a particular screening, not evidence of a pattern across cinemas.

UOL identified the woman who was pushed as Melissa Oliveira and reported her account of a child using YouTube and talking loudly during the film. Oliveira said she hadn't been rude to the child. The same report recorded the other woman's complaint that Oliveira had been insulting her granddaughter. The two accounts gave different explanations for the disagreement before it turned physical.

In its statement to the press, reproduced by SBT News, Itaú Cinemas condemned violence and said the spectator had received help from the venue's security. Its response also stressed its commitment to a safe, welcoming environment. That statement records the cinema's position at the time; it doesn't resolve every disagreement about the exchange before the footage began.

AdoroCinema's July 25 coverage identified a TikTok post by Sophia Ferreira from the previous day. It also noted Billie Eilish's music playing over the credits during the confrontation. The music and the credits placed the filmed exchange at the end of the screening, even as the dispute itself drew attention away from the screen. Reports about the footage appeared across entertainment outlets that week.

The film and the dates

Barbie was a 2023 release directed by Greta Gerwig. Warner Bros. announced on August 6 that it had passed $1 billion worldwide. That later milestone gives the film's commercial context without turning it into an explanation for the confrontation. The incident and the accounts above belong to July 2023; the sources reviewed here don't establish a later court outcome.
