Deadpool & Wolverine Passed $1 Billion—and Then Broke an R-Rated Record

Deadpool & Wolverine passed $1 billion worldwide in 2024, then took the R-rated box-office record. Disney announced the record on August 16, after audiences had turned out for Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman's reunion.

The two milestones are easy to confuse. Joker was the first R-rated film to cross $1 billion, back in 2019. Deadpool & Wolverine followed it across that line and then went further, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film worldwide. That was the new achievement, and a major result for Marvel.

A New Entry in Marvel's Billion-Dollar Club

By Disney's August 16 announcement, the film had earned $1.086 billion in 23 days. The company counted it as the eleventh Marvel Cinematic Universe title to reach $1 billion, including the two Sony-distributed MCU films. That placed an unusually adult Marvel release alongside some very large ensemble adventures.

Familiar Company at the Box Office

The Avengers and Avengers: Endgame had already crossed $1 billion, along with Iron Man 3 and Black Panther. Deadpool & Wolverine joined them at that box-office milestone. The totals aren't a comparison of profit: budgets, marketing costs and theater shares differ. They also count ticket revenue, rather than the number of individual people who watched.

Two Characters, One Troubled Universe

The film follows Wade Wilson as a threat to his world draws him into a mission with Wolverine. The Time Variance Authority and travel between universes supply the machinery for the story. That setup also leaves room for appearances by characters familiar from earlier Marvel films, including some outside the MCU's main run.

A Ranking That Changed During the Run

Early reports placed the movie at different points in Marvel's box-office rankings as its total rose. Those positions were snapshots, not final results. The useful fixed milestone is the August announcement that it had surpassed the previous R-rated record. Disney later reported a worldwide total of roughly $1.3 billion for the film.

An Earlier Meeting in 2009

Jackman and Reynolds had appeared together in X-Men Origins: Wolverine long before this film. That movie's version of Deadpool differed sharply from the character Reynolds later played. The 2024 title wasn't their first shared Marvel screen appearance, even though it was the first film to put both characters' names on the marquee.

Different Routes Back to the Screen

Jackman's Wolverine began with X-Men in 2000 and became a recurring presence across the series. Reynolds' solo Deadpool film arrived in 2016, followed by a sequel in 2018. Their reunion brought those separate screen histories into the same story, with much of the humor relying on the audience recognizing them.

Deadpool Kept His Voice

Deadpool's profanity, violence and habit of addressing the audience remained part of the character. The film was Marvel Studios' first R-rated release. Joining the MCU did not turn the character into a family-friendly version of himself, which made the box-office result especially notable within that studio's catalog.

The Record Belonged to Joker Beforehand

Joker had already shown that an R-rated film could cross a billion dollars worldwide. Deadpool & Wolverine's distinction was surpassing the existing record, not creating the category. Both achievements are impressive, but they describe different events.

Looking Back at the 2024 Run

The film's July 2024 opening was followed by weeks of ticket sales, including after it crossed $1 billion. On August 16, Alien: Romulus arrived in U.S. theaters as another R-rated franchise release. Both dates belong to that summer's cinema calendar. For Deadpool & Wolverine, the announced record and Disney's later worldwide total are more useful than a ranking that changed week by week.
