Wolfs, a comedy action movie that was due to release in theaters across the US has had its plans changed.

The George Clooney and Brad Pitt-starring movie will not be made available in theaters widely; Apple will instead focus on its streaming release on Apple+.

Rather than a wide-scale, lengthy run, the film will instead be shown only at selected venues for a week.

The film will initially be released on September 20, before becoming available to Apple+ subscribers on September 27.

    Original Plan

Apple’s initial rollout plan was to involve thousands of cinemas across the world, as it had done for previous titles.

However, the disappointing return from films such as Argyle, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon have meant the decision was made to cut back these ambitions.

    Premise of the Movie

In the movie, Brad Pitt and George Clooney play as professional “fixers”, responsible for covering up crimes for clients.

The “fixers” are drawn together when they are both assigned the same job, which is the impetus for subsequent events through the movie.

    Director

Wolfs is directed by Jonathan (Jon) Watts, a regular Marvel collaborator that directed several recent Spider-Man moves, including Homecoming and No Way Home.

His experience making light-hearted action may have been what attracted producers to appointing him as director for Wolfs, billed as an action comedy.

It is possible that the movie’s release troubles have less to do with the movie’s inherent quality than other factors.

According to sources speaking to Deadline, the movie has tested strongly with audiences.

    Signal of a Strategy Change?

The change in release strategy may signal a change of strategy for Apple from their previous distribution pattern.

After the cutback to the theatrical release of Wolfs, the only movie currently slated for widespread release is F1, another Brad Pitt-vehicle.

The change of plans may have a sliver lining, as it should mean that the title reaches Apple+ streamers at an earlier date.

If it were to have been played in thousands of international theaters, it would likely have been kept in cinemas for 45 days, before being sold at a premium on streaming services, and finally reach Apple+ months later.

    Sequel Plans

Perhaps in an effort to divert attention away from the release cutback, Apple have already announced a sequel to Wolfs.

This may show an expression of faith in the ability of Pitt and Clooney’s star power, and the quality of the film in general.

    Advertising Statement

Apple Original Films head of features, Matt Dentler, heaped praise on the flick ahead of its release.

He said: “With George and Brad’s remarkable and engaging chemistry under Jon Watts’ extraordinary direction, ‘Wolfs’ blends all the great elements of comedy, action, and drama into a hugely entertaining movie that will leave audiences ready for what’s next.”
