Actor and comedian Kevin Hart’s foray into the vegan fast-food world has come to an abrupt halt. Hart House, the plant-based chain he launched in 2022, closed all four of its Southern California locations on September 10, 2024. The sudden shutdown shocked fans and industry watchers alike. Hart’s ambitious venture aimed to provide affordable, tasty vegan alternatives to traditional fast-food fare. The chain’s menu featured plant-based chicken sandwiches, nuggets, and burgers, all priced under $8, with combo meals under $15.

From Hollywood to Fast Food: Hart's Journey

Kevin Hart’s journey into the vegan fast-food world began in 2020 when he adopted a mostly plant-based diet. Teaming up with CEO Andy Hooper, Hart set out to create a brand that would revolutionize fast food. Hart House avoided using popular plant-based products like Beyond and Impossible, opting instead to develop its own proprietary patties. The chain’s first location opened in August 2022 near LAX, strategically positioned to compete with nearby fast-food giants. Hart House quickly expanded, opening locations in Monrovia, University Park, and a flagship store on the iconic corner of Hollywood and Highland.

The Rise and Fall of a Vegan Empire

Hart House’s ambitious expansion seemed unstoppable at first. The chain’s Hollywood location, which opened in May 2023, symbolized its aspirations to become the future of quick-service restaurants. CEO Andy Hooper expressed pride in the location’s proximity to competitors like Chick-fil-A and In-N-Out. However, the restaurant industry has faced numerous challenges in recent years. The lingering effects of the pandemic, rising operational costs, and a struggling local film and TV industry have taken their toll on many establishments.

Fast Food Shakeup in the City of Angels

Hart House’s closure is part of a larger trend affecting the fast-food landscape in Los Angeles. Just days before Hart House’s announcement, East Coast burger chain Shake Shack closed five of its LA-area stores. These closures paint a picture of a challenging environment for fast-food chains in the city. However, it’s not all doom and gloom for the industry. Despite these high-profile closures, California is experiencing a significant boost in fast-food jobs. This growth comes even as the state’s mandated minimum wage increased from $15.50 to $20 an hour in April 2024. The contrast between individual chain struggles and overall industry growth highlights the complex nature of the current fast-food market.

Kevin Hart’s venture into the vegan fast-food world may have been short-lived, but it left an indelible mark on the industry. Hart House’s innovative approach to plant-based fast food challenged the status quo and inspired other entrepreneurs. While fans may mourn the loss of their favorite vegan burger joint, Hart’s bold experiment serves as a reminder of the ever-changing nature of the restaurant industry. As we bid farewell to Hart House, we can’t help but wonder: what’s next for Kevin Hart and the world of vegan fast food?
