Former professional footballer David Beckham is no stranger to infidelity scandals. Rumors of his unfaithfulness to his wife, Victoria Beckham, started as far back as September 2003 when he was seen at a nightclub with Rebecca Loos, his assistant. This happened only a few months after he moved to Madrid to play for Los Blancos, Real Madrid.
Things began to escalate on April 4, 2004, when the British News of the World Newspapers alleged that the football star had fired Loos after being romantically involved with her. Loos, on her part, intensified the rumor by confirming it in a tell-tale interview with English broadcaster Kay Burley later that month.
Speaking on how they first slept together on that September night, Loos said that they were both attracted to each other. She said, “I think the chemistry between David and I was so strong…we dropped off the other two people in the car and kissed passionately back to the hotel. It was like magnets, pretty amazing.”
Loos went further to say that she wasn’t scared of a lawsuit as she could prove her allegations because she noticed something about his body that only women intimate with him would know. David denied all Loos’ allegations. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of his struggle with infidelity scandals.
Shortly after Loos told her story, two other women, Sarah Marbeck and Celina Laurie, claimed to have had an affair with David in July 2001 and August 2002, respectively. Again, David Beckham denied their claims. All this while, Victoria stood solidly behind her husband and even joined him in suing the News of the World over their report on his alleged infidelity. The case was closed in 2006 when both parties finalized their out-of-court settlement.
In October 2004, yet another woman, Danielle Heath, claimed that she had an affair with David twice in Madrid. As always, the Beckhams denied the claims in a statement, “We are sick and tired of people trying to make money at the expense of our family. It is even more distressing when we are expecting our third child soon. The allegations are untrue, and it is in the hands of our lawyers.”
Speaking about the rumors and how they affected her, Victoria admitted to W Magazine in a 2007 interview that it was a tough time for her family. However, she said that she had learned to work through things with her husband, and they ended up happier than when they first got married.
In March 2013, Loos expressed her regret about how she handled her alleged affair with Beckham. “I’m a mother and married, and knowing what I know now, I would have gone about things quite differently…I was young and foolish and very reckless…. I don’t regret speaking out, but I regret how I went about it,” she said.
Meanwhile, Victoria has revealed, in a four-part Netflix docuseries about her husband, how much she resented him amid the scandals. She described the period as a nightmare and said the world was against them. On the other hand, Beckham says he has no idea how they overcame the tough times.
“Victoria is everything to me. To see her hurt was incredibly difficult, but we’re fighters, and at that time, we needed to fight for each other; we needed to fight for our family, and what we had was worth fighting for,” he said.
