How Robert Eggers Brought “Nosferatu” Back to the Screen

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu reached U.S. cinemas on December 25, 2024. Its Christmas release placed a story of obsession and a vampire in the middle of the holiday movie calendar, with Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter and Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok.

The film revisits the 1922 silent horror classic rather than introducing a new monster. For anyone catching up with it, the cast and the director's earlier work offer a useful starting point, without needing a prediction about how frightening every viewer will find it.

Focus Features describes the story through the connection between a haunted young woman and the vampire obsessed with her. Depp's Ellen is married to Thomas Hutter, played by Nicholas Hoult. Willem Dafoe plays Professor Albin Eberhart von Franz, who becomes involved as the supernatural threat unfolds.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney are also in the cast. The names on the poster give the production some familiar faces, though the characters and their relationships belong to this particular telling.

A Familiar Subject for Eggers

Eggers had already directed The Witch, The Lighthouse and The Northman before making Nosferatu. Those films move through different settings, but they help explain the interest in his approach to another historical horror story. Dafoe had previously worked with him in The Lighthouse.

The earlier Nosferatu was directed by F.W. Murnau and drew on Bram Stoker's Dracula. Eggers' film therefore arrives with both a silent-film predecessor and a wider vampire tradition behind it. The title doesn't mean the new film is a shot-for-shot reproduction of the old one.

The Finished Cast Matters More Than the Rumors

The project spent years in development, with other performers linked to earlier versions of the production. The completed film stars Depp and Hoult as the Hutters, alongside Skarsgård's Orlok. Focus announced the production underway in 2023 with that cast.

That is the useful distinction when reading older previews. Casting reports and release expectations can describe a project still changing. The 2024 film is the version that was completed and released, with its own performances, design and interpretation of the story.
