Disney/Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” is not only the highest grossing film of 2024 so far and the highest grossing Pixar film ever, it is now the highest grossing animated film of all time.
The film has earned a staggering $1,462,720,838 so far, and is still in theaters. In celebration we are going to look at the animated films it beat out to get to the top spot. Here are the rest of the top 10 grossing animated films of all time!
“Frozen II” (2019)
Though not as well received critically as the original film, Disney’s “Frozen II” was an even bigger success at the box office.
The film, which sees Kristen Bell’s Princess (now Queen) Anna reunited with her siser Idina Menzel’s Elsa, made $1,453,683,476
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023)
One of only two movies on our list that isn’t a sequel, Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” was an enormous success at the box office last year.
Mario, Luigi, Peach and the gang made $1,361,992,475 at the box office and broke what many saw as a curse on video game adapted to film.
“Frozen” (2013)
The only film on our list not beholden to existing IP, Disney’s “Frozen was a massive success in 2013.
Featuring songs that many kids, and kids at heart, still know every word of, “Frozen” made $1,290,000,000 at the box office and heralded the return of the Disney animated musical.
“Incredibles 2” (2018)
The return of Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl, and their super powered family took 14 long years to arrive and the public was clearly excited to see them again.
The film took in $1,242,805,359 at the box office as well as being nominated for Best Animated Film at the 2018 Academy Awards.
“Minions” (2015)
Love or hate the little yellow nonsense talkers, there is no denying the power the Minions hold over children and, by extension, the box office.
The first film on our list from the “Despicable Me” franchise, Universal’s “Minions” made $1,159,398,397 at the box office.
“Toy Story 4” (2019)
The most recent entry in Disney/Pixar’s beloved “Toy Story” franchise, “Toy Story 4” reunited Woody, Buzz, and all the other toys in their first film in nine years.
Audiences clearly missed all their favorite childhood toys, as the film raked in $1,073,394,593 at the box office.
“Toy Story 3” (2010)
The massive success of “Toy Story 4” is no shock when you learn how much the previous entry in the beloved franchise made at the box office.
In what at the time was thought to be their final adventure, Buzz, Woody, and the gang made $1,066,969,703 at the box office.
“Despicable Me 3” (2016)
There’s no getting around it, audiences love Gru and his minions.
“Despicable Me 3” made $1,034,799,409 at the box office and helped the “Despicable Me” franchise become the most successful in animated film history.
“Lion King” (2019)
Ok so there is a bit of controversy in this entry. Despite being almost entirely made using animation, Disney does not consider their 2019 remake of their own animated classic to be an animated film!
And yet, the Academy of Motion Picture’s rules insist it is an animated film. If we are to defer to the Academy, that would make “Lion King” (2019) the highest grossing animated film of all time, with $1,663,079,059. But Disney insists that honor belongs to “Inside Out 2.” What do you think?
